TRANSPARENCY / SOURCES & METRICS

Every visual needs
a verifiable source.

The Atlas and dashboards report historical government agricultural estimates. Source definitions, limits and unavailable values are surfaced rather than replaced with invented numbers.

ABS state and national crop estimates

Our national/state Crop Explorer includes 842 published numeric observations from three official ABS Broadacre Crops 2024–25 workbooks: nine winter crops, four summer crops and sugarcane. The years shown are 2022–23, 2023–24 and 2024–25. Reported measures include levied crop production sold (tonnes), total crop area (hectares), local value sold (AUD), levy-payers or sugarcane business counts. Cotton has crop-area coverage only. No missing cells were imputed.

New: SA2 district Atlas

We imported 15,573 available numeric broadacre observations directly from the ABS Data API, AG_BROADACRE, covering 411 named Australian Statistical Area Level 2 (SA2) regions and 14 crop categories over the three published years. The new district Atlas compares like-for-like crop, region, metric and period; only those SA2s with suitable data appear coloured. Unpublished or suppressed entries are not zero. District and state figures are not farm-specific or property-level estimates. Rankings consider reportable areas and can be affected by suppression.

SA2 district geometry is generalised from ABS Australian Statistical Geography Standard 2021, while the national state map uses ASGS 2026 state outlines. Generalisation omits some fine coastal and island detail; the interactive map must not be used for surveying. Material is attributed to ABS under CC BY 4.0 (subject to original source exclusions).

Interpreting map colours

Reported-value shading compares absolute figures for the chosen unit, crop and year. Larger areas may have greater totals without greater productivity. The district change lens compares a published value against the preceding year's published value in that same region. If the prior year is missing or zero, no change is calculated. Selecting a district shows published regional detail and historic comparison; no estimates or forecasts are introduced.

National crop-composition shares use the sum of the included, published categories, not total Australian agricultural output. A national observation is not inferred by adding available states or SA2s: state and national totals are retained directly from the official workbooks.

Levied sales per mapped hectare

The regional volume-to-area analysis divides ABS levied crop tonnes sold by satellite-derived crop area for exactly the same crop, SA2 and year. This is NOT an agronomic yield estimate: levied sales exclude on-farm consumption and sometimes stored product. A 100-ha display threshold reduces tiny-area artefacts but is not an ABS confidentiality rule. Missing reported cells are not imputed and the original tonnes and hectares remain visible.

Historical local value per levied tonne

Our historical value-per-tonne lens joins the ABS-reported local levied crop sales value in Australian dollars with the ABS-reported levied crop production sold in tonnes for exactly the same crop, SA2 area and financial year. The resulting ratio (AUD/tonne) is an exploratory aggregate derived from published data. It is NOT a current market quote, farm contract price, cash return, farm profit, forecast or measure of quality. To reduce tiny-denominator distortions, the comparative ratio lens and Premium multi-region ratio research exclude regions with fewer than 100 reported levied tonnes. This is our display rule, not an ABS suppression threshold, and the count of filtered areas is disclosed. A missing value or denominator is not treated as zero.

ABS horticulture 2022–23 to 2024–25

The horticulture explorer separately imports officially published numeric observations for avocados, bananas, macadamias and winegrapes from ABS Data API AG_HORTICULTURE. Source data are at national, state and ASGS2021 SA2 geographies with withheld/unavailable values excluded. Import validity requires a complete source response. Winegrape “crush” is grapes crushed, not total growing/harvest tonnage. Macadamia production is in-shell weight, not kernel tonnage. Avocado and macadamia bearing area is distinguished from total area. No such specialised production measures are combined with broadacre levied crop sales. Horticulture region maps are not claimed to be complete because the original broadacre polygon layer does not contain every new horticulture SA2. Explore horticulture →

ABARES farm finance

Four national cash-income observations are reported from ABARES' Financial performance of broadacre and dairy farms June 2026 report: 2024–25 average broadacre and dairy farm cash income and their published ten-year reference averages. Values are expressed in 2024–25 Australian dollars. Survey means are not profit, revenue, farm-specific lending advice or future forecasts. Comprehensive verified regional ABARES time series are not yet available in the site.

Planning calculators

Revenue = hectares × expected yield (t/ha) × user-entered price (AUD/t)
Variable cost = hectares × user-entered cost (AUD/ha)
Gross margin = revenue − variable cost

Livestock models calculate revenue from head count, sale weight and price per kilogram, and deduct user-specified variable costs and mortality. Both calculators are hypothetical. They do not integrate real-time market prices, soil conditions, weather, financing or business-specific taxes.

Independent data use

ABS information is attributed to the Australian Bureau of Statistics. ABARES Commonwealth material is generally CC BY 4.0 subject to publication-specific exclusions. Public availability is not assumed to permit redistribution of third-party protected data, Bureau of Meteorology material or commercial market feeds.
